Shops & Businesses
These are the places that people usually go to do their shopping or have fun.

General Shopping
There is one or two in each two supermarkets, depending how big the town is, and only one type owned by the same person, called AFFU. It is usually about two storeys high, with every single food you could have in there, with a small clothes section, and other items e.g. magazines. However, even though there is almost any variety of grocery you can buy here, because there is little of them in a city, there are also many small shops that may specialize in one type of food, e.g. bakery, butchers etc. Newsagents are also quite popular, but usually contain more magazines than newspapers, as all news shout outs are broadcasted on the television.

Clothes
There are a few main clothes stores. The first one is YOUNG 5EVER, which sells expensive clothes, but is very popular, as it is a 'brand name.' The second one is FOURYU, which, though the clothes are not as good quality and it is not a 'brand name,' is much cheaper than Young 5Ever. SIMPLY is another store, but this would be regarded as the 'Hipster Store' as it would be called, because that is the type of clothes it sells. The last store is CEES&MON, this is a complete variety of clothes with all age groups in mind.

Food & Eating Out.
Mercury is like today's 'McDonalds,' and is the biggest fast food chain ever, though there are a few others. There is a small caf? called Sharlene's, and a very expensive restaurant named 'An Bia Go Halainn.' Also, in the apartment block is a small restaurant known simply as 'The Place To Eat.'

Entertainment
There is a cinema with an attached bowling alley and soft play area for younger children. there are two night clubs, the 18+ one called Club Kiss, and the 13 - 18 one called Club Lights. Club Kiss has an attached arcade and casino.

There is a swimming pool, with an upstairs for gym and a separate room for Jacuzzi and spa treatment. There are two libraries and a toy store named Toys4U. The pub/bar is called Wesleys Lounge with Karaoke on Fridays and live music on Saturdays.

-- Most stores are a lot like your average ones today, though perhaps a bit more modern and extravagant.

This is where the majority of playable characters live.

Fujitsu moans that Windows 8 is killing PC sales -

Fujitsu said the company will miss its annual shipment target for personal computers and it is blaming the fact that Windows 8 is not selling.

Fujitsu President Masami Yamamoto, 58, told reporters in Tokyo that interest in the software was weak.

He said that sales of devices running Windows fell 21 per cent from a year earlier in the four weeks after Microsoft released Windows 8 on October 26. The decrease has been fuelled by a 24 per cent drop in sales of notebook computers.

"Fujitsu doesn't plan to join its competitors that are discounting" to sustain sales, Yamamoto said. The company needs to strengthen its services in overseas markets, shifting from a product-focused approach.

But the announcement means that hopes that the release of Windows 8 helping PC sales to grow have proven groundless. Traditionally the release of new version of Windows has resulted in a boom in hardware. This is because the new software would require better hardware to run.

However with the last two versions of Windows that has not been the case. The software runs on more or less the same spec as the old hardware.

This means that people do not need a better computer to run Windows 8. In fact many of them can run it nicely on their old machines and squeeze out another few years of life.

To make matters worse for hardware makers, Windows 8 is more efficient at using hardware than Windows 7. It actually improves the older machine. If you bought a Windows 7 machine, all you need to do to make it better is move to Windows 8.

Does this mean that Windows 8 is a success? No, it most certainly doesn't. But it does mean that we should be looking a little askance at those claiming that sluggish hardware sales are as a result of a Windows 8 failure. This time really is different for Microsoft: you don't have to buy new kit in order to be able to run the software. Thus the success or not of Windows 8 just isn't going to be reflected in hardware sales in the same way as previous releases of the OS.?

Andy Reid Fired As Eagles' Coach, Could Remain With Team In Some Capacity: REPORT

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? Andy Reid is out after 14 years coaching the Philadelphia Eagles, three people familiar with the decision told The Associated Press following Sunday's 42-7 season-ending loss to the New York Giants.

Reid is scheduled to meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Monday to discuss his future and an official announcement will come afterward, according to one person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because a final agreement hasn't been reached. That person says there's a chance Reid might remain with the team in some capacity.

Reid is due to make $6 million in 2013 in the final year of his contract. He said he wants to coach next year, but it's possible Lurie could persuade him to take a season off and perhaps help out in the front office in an "advisory" role.

Eagles spokesman Derek Boyko denied several reports that Lurie has already fired Reid, saying it's "absolutely, 100 percent" untrue.

The Eagles (4-12) finished their worst season under Reid by losing 11 of their last 12 games. They missed the playoffs two straight years for the first time under Reid.

After the ugly loss to the Giants (9-7), Reid sounded like a man who knew he was going to lose his job.

"We weren't very good," Reid said. "That's my responsibility and I take complete blame for it."

Asked if he wants to return in 2013, Reid said: "I'm all in."

Lurie said after the Eagles went 8-8 in 2011 that he considered firing Reid. He gave him another chance, but said before this season that 8-8 would be "unacceptable."

"I go in eyes wide open," Reid said of his meeting with Lurie. "Either way, I understand. Whatever he chooses will be the right thing. He always does things for the best interests of the Eagles."

Reid won more games (140) than any coach in franchise history. He led the Eagles to nine playoff appearances, six division titles, five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl loss.

But he couldn't win the big one and that's how he's measured in a city that hasn't celebrated an NFL title since 1960.

The Eagles haven't won a playoff game since 2008 and took significant steps backward the last two years. They entered both seasons with high expectations only to fail miserably.

"We had quite a run," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said.

Players said they expect changes, but continued to support Reid.

"He's a great man and I love him to death," said quarterback Michael Vick, who could've played his last game with the Eagles. "I wish I could've done more. A lot of players wish they could've done more. Coaches can't play the games."

The Eagles talked all week about wanting to win one for Reid. Instead, they suffered another embarrassing loss to cap a dismal season.

"We came, we stunk it up and we lost. It was terrible. No heart," defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins said.

Like Jenkins, Vick also questioned his teammates' desire before trying to clarify his comment.

"It's frustrating," Vick said. "It's difficult because, me, I leave it all out on the field and I give everything I got. Sometimes, I wish I could play other positions, but I can't."

Vick was 19 of 35 for 197 yards, one TD and one interception in his first game since Nov. 11. He missed the previous six games, sitting out the first five with a concussion and then being inactive last week. Vick only got the start because rookie Nick Foles broke his hand.

Vick is due to earn about $16 million next year, but the Eagles can release him without taking a financial hit. He wants to be a starter and is unsure whether he even wants to come back.

"I don't know. I have to take time to think about everything that's happened," Vick said.

This already was a difficult year for Reid. He endured a devastating loss weeks before the season opener when his oldest son, Garrett Reid, died at training camp after a long battle with drug addiction.

In October, Reid fired close friend and longtime assistant Juan Castillo, who was in his second season as defensive coordinator after coaching the offensive line for 13 years. He later fired defensive-line coach Jim Washburn.

After beating the defending Super Bowl champion Giants on Sept. 30, the Eagles lost eight straight games ? their worst losing streak in 42 years.

Before coming to Philadelphia, Reid was an offensive assistant for six seasons under Mike Holmgren in Green Bay and was instrumental in Brett Favre's growth. Reid inherited a team that went 3-13 under Ray Rhodes in 1998 and was a laughingstock in the NFL. He was an unpopular choice among fans in Philadelphia. But Reid won them over quickly by turning the Eagles into a playoff team in just his second season.

Reid drafted Donovan McNabb with the No. 2 pick in the 1999 draft and developed him into a six-time Pro Bowl quarterback. Reid and McNabb guided the Eagles to five straight playoff appearances from 2000-04. They went to the NFC title game four consecutive years, finally winning one in January 2005 over the Atlanta Falcons. But the Eagles lost to the New England Patriots 24-21 in the Super Bowl, and have missed the playoffs in four of the last eight years.

Reid's tenure in Philadelphia included several controversial decisions. He brought in star wide receiver Terrell Owens here in 2004, finally giving McNabb a legitimate target. T.O. had an outstanding year, overcame a late-season injury and returned to have an excellent game in the Super Bowl. But Owens feuded with management and McNabb the next season and Reid kicked him off the team in November 2005.

In 2009, Reid and Lurie gave Vick a second chance in the NFL after the former star quarterback had spent 18 months in federal prison for dogfighting charges. Vick took over as the starter in 2010, had a remarkable season and led the Eagles to the NFC East title.

The decision to switch Castillo from offense to defense may have been Reid's worst mistake. The unusual move was heavily criticized and contributed to the defense's collapse.

"I'll always put it on the players," Jenkins said. "Coaches can only do so much. Players have to step up and make plays."

Reid's stoic personality and bland news conferences annoyed fans and even some members of the media. He refused to call out players and always took the blame after each loss, saying he had to "do a better job" and "put players in better position to perform."

While that didn't make him popular outside the locker room, Reid was respected by his players. They supported him to the end.

"He's a great coach, a great person. I love the guy," safety Kurt Coleman said.

Maine set to ring wedding bells for same-sex couples

(Reuters) - Same-sex couples in Maine were counting down the hours on Friday until the first wedding bells were due to ring, less than two months after state residents approved gay marriage in a historic vote.

The city clerk's office in Portland, the state's largest city with a metropolitan population of 250,000, planned to open a minute after midnight and stay open for three hours to accommodate same-sex couples rushing to wed. City clerk offices in Maine typically are closed on Saturdays.

Along with voters in Maryland and Washington state, Maine residents approved same-sex unions on November 6, Election Day, becoming the only states to pass such a measure by popular vote.

Nine of the 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C. now have legalized gay marriage. Another 31 states have passed constitutional amendments banning it.

In Bangor, Maine, the city clerk's office was planning to be open on Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. for residents to obtain marriage licenses.

The Brunswick town clerk's office was set to be open from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday by appointment and, as of midday on Friday, five same-sex couples had booked appointments, the office said.

Same-sex weddings are being booked starting in the spring at the On the Marsh Bistro in Kennebunk, said owner Denise Rubin.

"We support it wholeheartedly," she said. "We look forward to being part of a whole new wave of wonderful thinking."

The tide of public opinion has been shifting in favor of allowing same-sex marriage. In May, President Barack Obama became the first U.S. president to say he believed same-sex couples should be allowed to get married.

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to review two challenges to federal and state laws that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

The nation's highest court said this month it will review a case against a federal law that denies married same-sex couples the federal benefits that heterosexual couples receive.

It also will look at a challenge to California's ban on gay marriage, known as Proposition 8, which voters narrowly approved in 2008.

Washington state's law legalizing same-sex unions took effect on Sunday, December 9, and Maryland's law takes effect on January 1, 2013.

A Pew Research Center survey from October found 49 percent of Americans favored allowing gay marriage, with 40 percent opposed.

Peter Parker death (gasp!) roils Spider-Man fans. Why they're taking it hard.

Peter Parker death in the current 'Amazing Spider-Man' issue caught readers and fans off guard ? and will probably deliver a sales kick for publisher Marvel Comics.?

Mr. Parker first became a hero to a nation of comic fans in 1962, discovering his super powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. The original story, which introduced into the lexicon the phrase ?with great power, comes great responsibility,? has served as the foundation for dozens of comic book titles, television shows, movie franchises, and a Broadway musical featuring songs by members of the rock band U2.

Yet Parker takes his last breath in issue 700 of the original series title, which arrived in stores Wednesday ? a decision meant both to deliver a sales kick to end-of-year revenue and to refresh a character who remains a flagship for the media powerhouse. Marvel Entertainment is owned by Walt Disney Co., which purchased the 73-year-old comics giant in 2009.

Rob Salkowitz, a Seattle-based author of ?Comic-Con and the Business of Pop Culture,? says Marvel probably knew Parker?s demise would become headline news this week because the character is an icon well known ?outside the bubble of comic fans.? Comics publishers routinely look for ways to catch readers off guard in an effort to show that they are not neglecting their creative duties, adds Mr. Salkowitz.

?To keep those characters fresh, [publishers] have to churn through new ideas pretty quickly, and they have to give readers the impression [that] big changes are happening ? [so] every so often they drop a boulder in the pond and create waves just to keep people interested,? he says.

The decision to kill off Parker is intended to renew interest in the character and to create new story lines for the future,?Dan Slott, writer of the last 70 issues of ?The Amazing Spider-Man,? told the Associated Press Thursday. In the final issue, Spider-Man finally falls to longtime nemesis Doctor Octopus, known as Otto Octavius to his mother.

?This is an epic turn.? ?Every now and then, you have to shake it up," Mr. Slott said. "The reason?Spider-Man?is one of the longest-running characters is they always find a way to keep it fresh. Something to shake up the mix.??

Housing and Welcoming "The Cliff" - ValuePlays | ValuePlays

  • Posted by ToddSullivan
  • on December 28th, 2012

The past two weeks have seen positive ?surprises? in GDP, initial unemployment claims, housing starts, pending home sales and I have detailed the refusal of rail traffic to do its normal year end collapse. Yet markets are selling off due to the ?fiscal cliff? hysteria. It is just that, hysteria. Just like last year the EU was going to destroy the world, the fiscal cliff is more hype than reality. That is fine though as it gives rational people mis-priced equities to buy that will lead to superior gains in 2013. Just like the end of 2012 gave us a $5 $BAC and $AIG warrants at $7 (both up ~100% since). The current reaction is giving us some more opportunities.

Patient investors with an eye past tomorrow in a perverse way should welcome the cliff and the opportunities is may give us. Whatever happens it will pass and eventually get solved. But the wonderful prices we may get to buy stocks at and hold will be with us for a very long time after the cliff is long forgotten.

To that end, housing will continue to drive the economy in 2013. The supply of new homes is just far too low and is leading to increased construction and will continue to do so for the next few years. This in turn will lead to more construction jobs and we will see the benefits of that. Note: housing?s turn has not lead to the expected jobs increase because builders have been finishing off previously mothballed projects. New land is being bought and new projects started. We have already seen some of this effect on construction jobs and it will accelerate into 2013.

?Davidson? submits

The Monthly Supply of New Homes for Sale(New Home Inventory) remains low at 4.7mos and continues to be a positive for equities-see chart. The historical Neutral Supply/Demand Trend Line for this economic measure is ~6.2mos. Above the historical trend represents too much supply and results in declining Residential Construction Employment while below the trend has proven positive for increases in this employment category. The New Home Sales market turned positive ~14mos ago but has yet to register much improvement in related employment. We should witness improvement in this employment category in future months as has been the historical pattern. Like all economic data, predicting with precision is so often stymied by the statistical collection methods and ad hoc government action, but even so the current trends favor higher equity prices the next several years.

Optimism remains warranted.

Elvis Presley, The Beatles top list of most-forged autographs

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Elvis Presley and The Beatles top the list of most-forged celebrity signatures in 2012, with less than half of their autographs for sale certified as genuine, memorabilia authenticators PSA/DNA said on Thursday.

The King and The Fab Four British rockers, who topped the list two years ago when it was last released, joined notable figures such as former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and late pop star Michael Jackson on the list of most-forged celebrity signatures.

Late American astronaut Neil Armstrong landed at No. 3 on the list, after fake Armstrong signatures rose significantly after his death in July.

One reason forgeries of Armstrong's autograph soared was that he rarely signed for fans during his life, Joe Orlando, president of Newport Beach-based PSA/DNA, told Reuters.

"Armstrong is someone who is very conscious of the value of his own autograph," Orlando said. "Even before he passed away he was very tough to get...It really heightens the level of his market."

Secretaries and assistants responding to huge volumes of fan mail are one reason for fake signatures floating through the marketplace, said Margaret Barrett, director of entertainment and music memorabilia at Heritage Auctions in Los Angeles.

"Back in the day, the kids would write to the movie studios," Barrett said.

"There was absolutely no financial gain 50 years ago and secretaries and assistants just wanted to make them happy. A lot of times people stumble upon an old box of signed photographs in grandma's attic and don't know they're forged."

Barrett, whose specialty is late Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe's autographs, said that official documents such as contracts and checks are reliable sources to verify whether or not a signature is forged.

"A good rule of thumb is to compare it a signed contract," she said. "Sometimes (celebrities) would have secretaries or other sign photos and letters but they couldn't have a contract signed by a proxy."

NASA's Ion Thruster Sets Continuous Operation Record

Last I heard, xenon was a gas, and that sure sounds like an awful lot of it - how much is left (on our planet)?

Seriously man.. 770kg shouldnt sound like "an awful lot of it" when you are asking about how much we have "on our planet." You do know how massive the atmosphere is, right?

Extracting a liter of xenon from the atmosphere requires 798000 joules of energy, and 770 kg of xenon is 131804 liters. So thats 104388768000 joules of energy.

(yes, I am shooting for "oh noes big number")

Thats equivalent to under 3 minutes of output of the typical (average American) coal plant that puts out 667MW.

Our Year In Dating As Told In GIFs

Winona, Julie and Rachel spent much or all of the year in serious relationships, but Ami, Jessica and I were on the prowl. Here?s what the 2012 dating scene was like for us single Frisky ladies?

When a guy on OKCupid wanted to exchange numbers and I suggested email addresses instead and he was like, ?I don?t do email.?

When he told me I embarrassed him in front of his friends when I kissed him on the cheek and held his hand.

When he sent me a text message saying, ?I just can?t do this.?

When the best compliment he could come up with was ?Your eyes are ominous.?

When he made fun of my bike on our second date.

When he kissed me for the first time in the subway station.

When he told me he was taking me to trapeze school for our second date.

When he said he wanted to stay in bed longer to sniff my pillow.

When he messaged me with his phone number and said, ?Text me sometime if you want to hang out.?

When he asked if I wanted to come back to his place after he acted like a dick on our second date.

When I found out that the hot British guy who writes me dirty emails lives in Paris AND does not want a relationship right now.

When he squeezed my butt while walking up a flight of stairs and I yelled at him for doing that in public, but secretly was kind of turned on.

When we had an amazing conversation on the first date and then I never heard from him again.

When I?m at Toys In Babeland and I find myself a BOB (battery operated boyfriend)?

When the guy I was sleeping with told me he didn?t want to have sex with me anymore because he liked me too much as a person.

When I excused myself to go to the bathroom and my date, who I just met 30 minutes prior, followed me, thinking I wanted to make out.

Whenever the guy I was banging suggested we break out the full-length mirror.

What I was really thinking when my mom asked what I was looking for in a man.

Every time I sat at a bar, waiting for a date to arrive, annoyed that he was late.

When I Get The OKCupid Alert, ?Someone Chose You!?

When a guy is?32, but according to his online dating profile, is looking for a woman who isn?t older than 29.

Payroll Tax Likely To Rise After Fiscal Cliff ? CBS Miami

WASHINGTON (CBSMiami) ? While much of the focus with the ongoing austerity crisis on Capitol Hill has been overall tax rates, both President Barack Obama and Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner have agreed on one tax principle: ending the payroll tax holiday.

President Obama had originally sought to extend the payroll tax holiday, but Republican opposition caused the president to effectively scuttle the plan. The tax will hit all Americans, but working Americans the hardest.

Two years ago during the heart of the Great Recession, the Social Security payroll tax was dropped by two percent to 4.2 percent. The rate has stayed the same for the last two years, but with the impending austerity crisis about to hit, the payroll tax will increase by 2 percent on January 1.

On average, a worker will lose $40 per paycheck due to the tax increase, according to TalkingPointsMemo.com. Combining the payroll tax hike with a possible cut to unemployment compensation could lower economic growth by 0.7 percent over the next two years, according to TPM.

Republicans will not let the payroll tax cut pass unless it?s part of a larger fiscal deal between Congressional Republicans and Democrats. President Obama wanted the tax break extended to help provide fiscal stimulus.

It does put Republicans in an awkward position. On the one hand they oppose any tax increases for any reason, but on the other, it?s a stimulus move pitched by the President, which they also oppose.

According to TPM, the White House may try to replace the tax with other stimulus measures like infrastructure investments/improvements.

Still, as both sides argue about increasing taxes on the wealthy, both sides appear to be more than willing to let at least one tax increase happen.

Fees undermine fliers' ability to compare fares - Hampton Roads

WASHINGTON

For many passengers, air travel is only about finding the cheapest fare.

But as airlines offer a proliferating list of add-on services, from early boarding to premium seating and baggage fees, the ability to comparison-shop for the lowest total fare is eroding.

Global distribution systems that supply flight and fare data to travel agents and online ticketing services like Orbitz and Expedia, accounting for half of all U.S. airline tickets, complain that airlines won't provide fee information in a way that lets them make it handy for consumers trying to find the best deal.

"What other industry can you think of where a person buying a product doesn't know how much it's going to cost even after he's done at the checkout counter?" said Simon Gros, chairman of the Travel Technology Association, which represents the global distribution services and online travel industries.

The harder airlines make it for consumers to compare, "the greater opportunity you have to get to higher prices," said Kevin Mitchell, chairman of the Business Travel Coalition, whose members include corporate travel managers.

Now the Obama administration is wading into the issue. The Department of Transportation is considering whether to require airlines to provide fee information to everyone with whom they have agreements to sell their tickets. A decision originally scheduled for next month has been postponed to May, as regulators struggle with a deluge of information from airlines opposed to regulating fee information, and from the travel industry and consumer groups that support such a requirement.

Meanwhile, Spirit Airlines, Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines ? with backing from industry trade associations ? are asking the Supreme Court to reverse an appeals court ruling forcing them to include taxes in their advertised fares. The appeals court upheld a Transportation Department rule that went in effect nearly a year ago that ended airlines' leeway to advertise a base airfare and show the taxes separately, often in smaller print. Airlines say the regulations violate their free-speech rights.

At the heart of the debate is a desire by airlines to move to a new marketing model in which customers don't buy tickets based on price alone. Instead, following the well-worn path of other consumer companies, airlines want to mine personal data about customers in order to sell them tailored services. You like to sit on the aisle and to ski, so how would you like to fly to Aspen with an aisle seat and a movie, no extra baggage charge for your skis, and have a hotel room and a pair of lift tickets waiting for you, all for one price? You're a frequent business traveler. How about priority boarding, extra legroom, Internet access and a rental car when you arrive?

"Technology is changing rapidly. We are going to be part of the change," said Sharon Pinkerton, vice president of Airlines for America, which represents most U.S. carriers. "We want to be able to offer our customers a product that's useful to them, that's customized to meet their needs, and we don't think (the Transportation Department) needs to step in."

If airlines have their way, passengers looking for ticket prices may have to reveal a lot more information about themselves, such as their age, marital status, gender, nationality, travel history and whether they're flying for business or leisure. The International Air Transport Association, whose 240 member airlines cover 84 percent of global airline traffic, adopted standards at a meeting earlier this month in Geneva for such information gathering by airlines as well as by travel agents and ticketing services that would relay the data to airlines and receive customized fares in return.

"Airlines want, and expect, their (ticket) distribution partners to offer passengers helpful contextual information to make well-informed purchase decisions, reducing the number of reservations made based primarily or exclusively on price," said a study commissioned by the association.

Consumer advocates question how airlines would safeguard the personal information they gather, and they worry that comparison shopping for the cheapest air fares will no longer be feasible.

"It's like going to a supermarket where before you get the price, they ask you to swipe your driver's license that shows them you live in a rich zip code, you drive a BMW, et cetera," Mitchell said. "All this personal information on you is going out to all these carriers with no controls over what they do with it, who sees it and so on."

The airline association said consumers who choose not to supply personal information would still be able to see fares and purchase tickets, though consumer advocates said those fares would probably be at the "rack rate" ? the travel industry's term for full price, before any discounts.

It's up to individual airlines whether they price fares differently for travelers who don't provide personal information, said Perry Flint, a spokesman for the international airline association.

The stakes, of course, are enormous. Since 2000, U.S. airlines have lost money for more years than they've made profits. Fee revenue has made a big difference in their bottom lines. Globally, airlines raked in an estimated $36 billion this year in ancillary revenue, which includes baggage fees and other a la carte services as well as sales of frequent flyer points and commissions on hotel bookings, according to a study by Amadeus, a global distribution service, and the IdeaWorksCompany, a U.S. firm that helps airlines raise ancillary revenue. U.S. airlines reported collecting nearly $3.4 billion in baggage fees alone in 2011.

One expense airlines would like to eliminate is the $7 billion a year they pay global distribution systems to supply flight and fare information to travel agents and online booking agents like Expedia. Airlines want to deal more directly with online ticket sellers and travel agents, who dominate the lucrative business travel market. Justice Department officials have acknowledged an investigation is underway into possible anti-trust violations by distribution companies.

Airlines also have been cracking down on websites that help travelers manage their frequent flier accounts. The sites use travelers' frequent flier passwords to obtain balances and mileage expiration dates, and then display the information in a way that makes it easier for travelers to figure out when it makes more sense to buy a ticket or to use miles.

"What the airlines are trying to do right now is reinvent the wheel so they can hold all their information close to their chest," said Charles Leocha, founder of the Consumer Travel Alliance. "As we move forward in a world of IT, the ownership of passenger data is like gold to these people."

By withholding information like fee prices, he said, "we are forced to go see them, and then we are spoon-fed what they want to feed us."

Little time left to head off longshoremen's strike

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shipments of products as varied as flat-screen TVs, sneakers and snow shovels could sit idle at sea or get rerouted, at great time and expense, if more than 14,000 longshoremen go on strike as threatened ? a wide-ranging work stoppage that would immediately close cargo ports on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico to container ships.

Commerce could be brought to a near standstill at major ports from Boston to Houston if the strike takes place on Sunday, potentially delivering a big blow to retailers and manufacturers still struggling to find their footing in a weak economy.

"If the port shuts down, nothing moves in or out," said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation. And when the workers do return, "it's going to take time to clear out that backlog, and we don't know how long that it's going to take."

The 15 ports involved in the labor dispute move more than 100 million tons of goods each year, or about 40 percent of the nation's containerized cargo traffic. Losing them to a shutdown, even for a few days, could cost the economy billions of dollars.

In addition to transporting goods, U.S. factories also rely on container ships for parts and raw materials, meaning supply lines for all sorts of products could be squeezed.

"The global economy moves by water, and shutting down container ports along the East and Gulf coasts while the national economy remains fragile benefits no one," Deborah Hadden, acting port director at Massport, the public agency that oversees shipping terminals in Boston. It is not a part of the contract dispute.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said "the livelihood of thousands of Florida families lies in the balance."

The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, a group representing shipping lines, terminal operators and port associations, expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once already, for 90 days, but they have so far balked at extending it again when it expires at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

The union said its members would agree to an extension only if the Maritime Alliance dropped a proposal to freeze the royalties workers get for every container they unload. The Alliance has argued that the longshoremen, who it said earn an average $124,138 per year in wages and benefits, are compensated well enough already.

Federal mediators have been trying to push negotiations along, but there has been no word from either side on the progress of the talks since Dec. 24. As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, said the talks weren't going well and that a strike was expected.

The work stoppage would not be absolute. Longshoremen would continue to handle military cargo, mail, passenger ships, non-containerized items like automobiles, and perishable commodities, like fresh food.

Joseph Ahlstrom, a professor at the State University of New York's Maritime College and a former cargo ship captain, called container ships the "lifeblood of the country."

"We don't fly in a lot of products. It's just too expensive," Ahlstrom said. "The bulk of the products we import come in inside containers."

The White House has weighed in on the issue, urging dockworkers and shipping companies Thursday to reach agreement "as quickly as possible" on a contract extension. Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich said the administration is monitoring the situation closely.

If it happens, the walkout could be the biggest national port disruption since 2002, when unionized dockworkers were locked out of 29 West Coast ports for 10 days because of a contract dispute.

The ports only reopened after President George W. Bush, invoking powers given to him by the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, ordered an 80-day cooling-off period. Some economists estimated that each day of that lockout cost the U.S. economy $1 billion. It took months for the retail supply chain to fully recover.

An East Coast port freeze would have its biggest impact at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where 3,250 longshoremen handled 32.3 million tons of cargo in 2010. The authority is not a party to the contract dispute.

Other major ports affected would include Savannah, Ga., which handled 18 million tons, and Houston and Hampton Roads, Va., which each handled more than 12.5 million tons.

Thousands of other jobs would be directly affected by the shutdown. Truck drivers might not have any cargo to transport, tug boat captains no ships to guide and freight train operators nothing to haul.

Simultaneously, another labor dispute involving dock workers was playing out on the West Coast.

Longshoremen at several Pacific Northwest grain terminals worked Thursday under contract terms they soundly rejected last weekend. The owners implemented the terms after declaring talks at an impasse. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has yet to announce its next move.

Workplace rules, not salary and benefits, have been the obstacle to a new deal.

The dispute involves terminals in Portland, Ore., Vancouver, Wash., and Seattle, where longshoremen have been working without an agreement since the last contract expired Sept. 30.

Egypt's prosecutor orders probe against opposition

(AP) ? An Egyptian official says the country's top prosecutor has ordered an investigation into accusations against opposition leaders of incitement to overthrow the regime.

The prosecution official said Thursday a judge will investigate the report filed last month accusing Mohammed ElBaradei, Nobel Prize laureate and former head of the U.N. nuclear agency, along with Amr Moussa, former foreign minister and Hamdeen Sabahi, a former presidential candidate, of inciting the overthrow of Egypt's first elected president, Mohammed Morsi.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with government policies.

The accusations were filed by a lawyer during a political crisis over a series of presidential decrees that granted Morsi and the committee drafting the disputed constitution immunity from judicial oversight. Tensions were fed by deadly clashes between pro- and anti-Morsi demonstrators.

Stock fears leave accounts lighter ? Bankrate, Inc.

Stock market fears have cost investors $200 billion in gains over the past four years, Bloomberg reported Monday.

From the story "Americans miss $200 billion abandoning stocks":

Assets in equity mutual, exchange-traded and closed-end funds increased about 85 percent to $5.6 trillion since the?bull market began in March 2009, trailing the Standard & Poor's 500 Index's 94 percent advance, according to data compiled by Bloomberg and Morningstar Inc. The proportion of retirement funds in stocks fell about 0.5 percentage point, compared with an average rise of 8.2 percentage points in rallies since 1990.

Though the stock market has climbed to?near pre-crisis levels, it's been a perilous ascent for investors. Spikes of volatility through the years have kept investors on edge and uncomfortable. On March 9, 2009, the S&P 500 index hit a bottom. It's been on an upward trajectory ever since, but there have been some bumps along the way: between April and July 2010, the index pulled back about 16 percent; in July 2011, it lost about 18 percent through the beginning of October; and 2012 saw a drop of about 9 percent between the beginning of May and June.

The roller coaster has investors paring back on stocks. Though that could cost them in the long run, it may be a smart move to listen to their instincts during times of unpredictability, according to Matthew Tuttle, certified financial planner, CEO of Tuttle Wealth Management in White Plains, N.Y., and author of "How Harvard and Yale Beat the Market."

"Individual investors are right to fear the market. They also tend to invest and get out at exactly the wrong times. Until they can get beyond the traditional buy and hold advice, this will keep happening. The key to safety is being in harmony with market trends," Tuttle says. "Buy and hold would tell an investor that they should invest the same in 1995-1999 as they would in 2008. That makes no sense. Investors need to be invested when the market is in an uptrend -- 1995-1999, 2003, 2009 -- in cash or Treasuries or gold when it is in a downtrend, as in 2000 to 2002 and 2008. And they should play it close to the vest in years like this where risk is high and it could go either way. This is, of course, not easy for an individual to do because their emotions will betray them, but there are a bunch of tactical mutual funds and money managers out there."

The trick is knowing when to act

Though investors can take clues from economic indicators, timing the market is no easy feat. Most people get out of the market after they've lost money and reinvest after most of the gains have been made. A well-known study looked at the impact on overall returns from missing the 10 best days in the stock market. The same study also looked at what happens if you missed the 10 worst days over the past 84 years.

This chart from mutual fund and investing company, Invesco, shows how important limiting losses and maximizing returns is.

The market's worst days and effect on returns

Growth of $1 in the S&P 500 Index from Dec. 31, 1927, to Dec. 31, 2011

Days Growth of $1 Cumulative return (%)
Capture 10 best and worst 71.21 7,021.18
Miss 10 best 23.62 2,262.10
Miss 10 worst 226.14 22,514.32
Miss 10 best and worst 75.01 7,401.19
Cash 19.32 1,831.52

Sources: Bloomberg L.P., Invesco, Morningstar.

Avoiding big losses is key, but generating decent returns is also extremely important.?That's why most investors must balance safety with some risk rather than abandoning stocks entirely during times of perceived volatility and going all-in when it's perceived as safe. If anyone could tell the future with any reliability, the majority would probably give up on investing altogether and simply invest in lottery tickets.
