A television commercial sponsored by DeKalb Parks and Recreation Department caught my eye the other day. It features a mother driving her son from his driveway to the one next door and saying, ?Call me when you are ready to come home.? Later a newscast reported that one out of every four children in Georgia is overweight or obese.
Children who overeat are sending messages. Research has shown that parents of fat children talked less to them, gave them less approval and responded less to their behavior. In the same study, slim children said mealtime was more than food time. It was a time for interaction. Slim children ate less food at a slower rate and talked more to the group.
Recent studies report spending time with a child can help him or her slim down ??so we need to talk with children about body size. Don?t praise thin bodies too much, but make it clear that ?pleasingly plump? isn?t as good as it sounds. Parents should spend time with a child to help him or her slim down ? time talking, showing an interest in activities, planning vigorous games and sports and carrying them out.
Time also plays another role in the obesity crisis. Less nutritional dinners are the result of failing to plan in advance. See if your child can correctly answer these five food questions:
? How much protein should one have each day? A typical grade schooler needs about 14 ounces. An egg is one ounce. You can ask children to weigh other protein portions on a food scale or look at the weight on a package.
? Are potatoes good or bad food? Good. Potatoes are high in vitamin C and are not high in calories unless you put on too much topping. Use butter and sour cream in moderation. Try yogurt with chives as a topping.
? Is fish better than fowl or beef? Not necessarily. They can all be part of a balanced diet. Remember the saying, ?The whiter the meat, the lighter the meat.? In calories that is true.
? Is a salad necessary for supper? Yes, but it doesn?t have to be just a heap of lettuce with dressing. Add carrots, peppers, julienne beets, celery, olives, raisins, nuts, canned corn or peas, and try an oil and vinegar dressing.
? Are cake and pie good meal enders? Yes, but alternate these baked goods with gelatin desserts, tapioca and or applesauce.
