Anne Hathaway?s Wedding Photos Revealed (PHOTOS)

Anne Hathaway?and her groom Adam Shulman are the portrait of happiness ? locked in a kiss ? in photos from their sunset wedding on Saturday night in scenic Big Sur, Calif.

The pair welcomed 180 guests for a two-day extravaganza of fall fun surrounding the nuptials, at a private estate with sweeping views of the coastline.

As Celebuzz first reported, the?Dark Knight?star, 29, said ?I Do? to her actor-turned-jewelry designer husband just after 5 p.m. PT on Sept. 29.

Hathaway wore a custom-made?Valentino?gown with a headpiece and veil, while the groom looked dashing in a traditional black tuxedo and bow tie.

The pair exchanged vows just after 5 p.m. PT before posing for official photographs.

As we reported exclusively, the?ceremony?was a lavish affair with a white, pink and rustic theme. The couple spent?more than $100,000 on flowers.

?The floral arrangements and?wedding d?cor?were simple and rustic,? a source told?Celebuzz.

The flowers were arranged by The Velvet Garden, a floral design studio that specialized in high-end one of a kind designs. The florists previously created arrangements for the weddings of?Drew Barrymore,?Reese Witherspoon?and?Natalie Portman.

?The flowers took over a week to create,? added the source.

The wedding was designed by the same planner who handled?Portman?s Aug. 4 nuptials?to?Benjamin Millepied,?Yifat Oren.

Fighting Childhood ObesityYour Health Journal | Your Health Journal

The Walton Tribune?..

A television commercial sponsored by DeKalb Parks and Recreation Department caught my eye the other day. It features a mother driving her son from his driveway to the one next door and saying, ?Call me when you are ready to come home.? Later a newscast reported that one out of every four children in Georgia is overweight or obese.

Children who overeat are sending messages. Research has shown that parents of fat children talked less to them, gave them less approval and responded less to their behavior. In the same study, slim children said mealtime was more than food time. It was a time for interaction. Slim children ate less food at a slower rate and talked more to the group.

Recent studies report spending time with a child can help him or her slim down ??so we need to talk with children about body size. Don?t praise thin bodies too much, but make it clear that ?pleasingly plump? isn?t as good as it sounds. Parents should spend time with a child to help him or her slim down ? time talking, showing an interest in activities, planning vigorous games and sports and carrying them out.

Time also plays another role in the obesity crisis. Less nutritional dinners are the result of failing to plan in advance. See if your child can correctly answer these five food questions:

? How much protein should one have each day? A typical grade schooler needs about 14 ounces. An egg is one ounce. You can ask children to weigh other protein portions on a food scale or look at the weight on a package.

? Are potatoes good or bad food? Good. Potatoes are high in vitamin C and are not high in calories unless you put on too much topping. Use butter and sour cream in moderation. Try yogurt with chives as a topping.

? Is fish better than fowl or beef? Not necessarily. They can all be part of a balanced diet. Remember the saying, ?The whiter the meat, the lighter the meat.? In calories that is true.

? Is a salad necessary for supper? Yes, but it doesn?t have to be just a heap of lettuce with dressing. Add carrots, peppers, julienne beets, celery, olives, raisins, nuts, canned corn or peas, and try an oil and vinegar dressing.

? Are cake and pie good meal enders? Yes, but alternate these baked goods with gelatin desserts, tapioca and or applesauce.

Scientists shed light on riddle of sun's explosive events

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? Four decades of active research and debate by the solar physics community have failed to bring consensus on what drives the sun's powerful coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that can have profound "space weather" effects on Earth-based power grids and satellites in near-Earth geospace.

In a paper just published in Nature Physics, an international team of space scientists, including a researcher from the University of New Hampshire's Space Science Center (SSC), explains the mysterious physical mechanisms underlying the origin of CMEs. Their findings, based on state-of-the-art computer simulations, show the intricate connection between motions in the sun's interior and these eruptions and could lead to better forecasting of hazardous space weather conditions.

CMEs are clouds of magnetic fields and plasma ?- a hot gas composed of charged particles. The fastest and most powerful of these events can explode from the sun at speeds of more than a million miles per hour and release more energy than the current worldwide stockpile of nuclear weapons.

"By studying CMEs we learn not only about the drivers of space weather but also about the structure of the atmosphere of the sun and other sun-like stars," says lead author Ilia Roussev of the Yunnan Astronomical Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Geomagnetic storms caused by CMEs can disrupt power grids, satellites that operate global positioning systems and telecommunication networks, pose a threat to astronauts in outer space, lead to rerouting of flights over the polar regions, and cause spectacular auroras. The storms occur when a solar eruption hits Earth's protective magnetic bubble, or magnetosphere.

The Nature Physics paper provides an explanation of the origin of fast ejections of magnetized plasma from the sun's atmosphere and associated X-ray emissions. It thus demonstrates a fundamental connection between the magnetic processes inside the sun's interior and the formation of CMEs.

"Through this type of computer modeling we are able to understand how invisible bundles of magnetic field rise from under the surface of the sun into interplanetary space and propagate towards Earth with potentially damaging results," says SSC researcher No? Lugaz of the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space. He adds, "These fundamental phenomena cannot be observed even with the most advanced instruments on board NASA satellites but they can be revealed by numerical simulations."

A long-standing goal of the solar physics community has been the forecasting of solar eruptions and predictions of their impact on Earth. In the paper, the authors note, "the model described here enables us not only to capture the magnetic evolution of the CME, but also to calculate the increased X-ray flux directly, which is a significant advantage over the existing models."

The work was supported by a CAS grant and two National Science Foundation grants in the U.S. -- one at the University of Hawaii and another at UNH. In addition to Roussev and Lugaz, the international team includes Klaus Galsgaard from the Niels Bohr Institute in Denmark, Cooper Downs from Predictive Science, Inc. in California, Igor Sokolov from the University of Michigan, Jun Lin from the Yunnan Astronomical Observatory, and Elena Moise from the Institute of Geodynamics of the Romanian Academy of Science.

(AP) ? Now it's Mitt Romney who wants to be the candidate of change.

Romney is seizing on President Barack Obama's comment that "you can't change Washington from the inside." Grasping for a way to right his campaign and appeal to independents, the Republican nominee says he has what it takes to end the nasty partisanship in the nation's capital.

"I can change Washington," Romney said Thursday. "I will change Washington. We'll get the job done from the inside. Republicans and Democrats will come together."

Romney was expected to press the issue again Friday during a campaign rally in Nevada, a state hard hit by the nation's housing and unemployment woes.

Obama, who ran for president in 2008 on a pledge to fix Washington's combative tone, said in an interview that he had come to the conclusion "you can't change Washington from the inside. You can only change it from the outside." Adding that he wanted people to speak out on issues, he went on to say: "So something that I'd really like to concentrate on in my second term is being in a much more constant conversation with the American people so that they can put pressure on Congress to help move some of these issues forward."

After Romney focused on the "can't change Washington from the inside" segment of Obama's remarks, the president's campaign countered quickly by noting that Romney said just that in 2007 when he was running for the 2008 Republican nomination: "I don't think you change Washington from the inside. I think you change it from the outside."

Both candidates were campaigning Friday in battleground states, with Romney stumping and raising cash in Nevada and Obama holding a rally in Woodbridge, Va., just a short trip from the White House. Obama won both states in 2008.

Polling shows the race tight in both states, though Obama appears to have an edge in Virginia. Democrats with access to internal polling say Obama is up 3 or 4 percentage points over Romney in Virginia, a slimmer margin than in some recent public polling.

Obama has also pulled ahead of Romney in cash on hand, a key measure of a campaign's financial strength. The Democrat has more than $88 million to spend in the campaign's final weeks while Romney has just over $50 million at his disposal.

Romney's campaign is seeking to regroup after a rough stretch that included the emergence of a video in which he tells wealthy donors at a private fundraiser that 47 percent of Americans pay no income tax and that they believe they are victims and entitled to an array of federal benefits. Obama has cast those remarks as a sign that Romney is out of touch with most Americans.

"When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot," Obama said Thursday during a forum on Univision, the Spanish-language TV network.

Romney is also facing criticism from some in his own party that he's spending too much time raising money and not enough time talking to voters in the eight or so battleground states that will decide the election. In response, his campaign added a Sunday rally in Colorado to his schedule and announced a three-day Ohio bus tour that kicks off Monday.

The president will campaign this weekend in Wisconsin, a state Romney is trying to put in play. Republicans are hoping the addition of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan to the GOP ticket will help them claim victory there ? or at least force Obama to spend time and money to hold the state.

Even with Election Day under seven weeks away, voters across the country are already casting ballots. By week's end, early voting will be under way in two dozen states.

Obama was also making a play for older voters Friday by speaking via satellite to an AARP convention and taking questions from the group's members. The president's campaign is seeking to gain an advantage with seniors and voters nearing retirement by attacking the Republican ticket's plan for Medicare.

The popular federal entitlement for seniors was the focus of a new television ad from the Obama campaign. The ad, scheduled to air Friday in Colorado, Florida and Iowa, presents a Democratic refrain ? that Romney and Ryan would turn Medicare into a voucher program that could raise seniors' health costs by up to $6,400 a year.

Independent groups have said that a House Republican budget proposal led by Ryan could lead to higher costs for older Americans. But exactly how much is far from clear. The ad relies on the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal-leaning think tank, for the figure it cites.

Supporters of the Ryan plan say competition among private insurance providers could wring waste out of the system and bring down costs.

Samsung sells 20 million Galaxy S3 handsets in first 100 days

samsung galaxy s3 smartphone

Samsung's Galaxy S3 is still flying off the shelves, with 20 million units sold in its first 100 days.

The Galaxy S3 continues to sell at great speed, with Samsung announcing Thursday that 20 million devices have now been sold since it made its debut 100 days ago. The phone is the Korean tech company?s fastest-selling handset to date.

Samsung was confident from the start that the high-end S3 would do magical things for the electronics giant, with its head of mobile communications, JK Shin, claiming on launch day back in May that it would sell 10 million units before the end of July. It managed the feat with more than a week to spare.

This week it was reported that in August the S3 outsold Apple?s iPhone 4S for the first time since the 4S hit the market in October 2011 ? though of course, this could be down to some Apple fans holding off buying a new iPhone until later this month, when the so-called iPhone 5 is widely expected to make its debut.

Sales of the S3 may be impressive, but if the expected iPhone 5 sells like the 4S did earlier this year ? 35.1 million units in the first quarter ? then it?ll soon slip back behind Apple as the smartphone of choice for the majority of users. Some analysts predict sales of the new iPhone could top 10 million within a week of going on sale.

Also, there?s a chance that sales of the S3 could drop to zero overnight ? at least in the US ? if Apple succeeds in its attempt to have the device banned from sale over the matter of patent infringement.

For the time being though, the Korean company will be more than happy with the way its Android-powered S3 is moving off the shelves. Consumers have been attracted by its sleek design, large 4.8-inch screen and array of features, including face-, gesture- and voice recognition functionality. A powerful 8-megapixel camera which, among other things, allows you to take photos while recording video, has also helped it to stand out from the crowd. Now, how long before it notches up its 30 millionth sale?

Wisconsin Lutheran neighbors fight college's rezoning efforts

- selected newswatch item -

Sept. 5, 2012 11:18 a.m. | Administrators at Wisconsin Lutheran College are trying to reach out to residents in the neighborhoods around the school as it seeks to win approval of a rezoning of houses that it owns.

But some residents are skeptical of the college's long-range plans, in spite of its assurances. Many are long-term residents with years of experience with the college that has made them wary.

At a July meeting, Plan Commission members, faced with 16 residents opposed to the rezoning, and a petition signed by 38 also in opposition, put off the college's request, and asked it to return with more detailed plans and a clearer picture of its future. The college plans to return to the commission Sept. 10. ?Read Full Article

Updated: 11:58 a.m. | The state Department of Justice has been asked to review possible charges in a weekend Milwaukee homicide because the suspect in the case is the son of a Milwaukee judge.

James Donegan, 32, is being held in the Milwaukee County jail on $250,000 bail. He was arrested Sunday night shortly after the stabbing death of Teresa Boone at Kilbourn Reservoir Park. Police credited witness cooperation for the quick arrest.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern said Wednesday that his office had asked the attorney general's office to handle the review of the case and make the decision on what charges, if any, to file in the homicide to avoid any appearance of bias due to Donegan's relationship to Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Thomas P. Updated: 10:48 a.m. | Green Bay -- Before training camp --- at the annual shareholders meeting --- general manager Ted Thompson made a point to say the Packers were "maturing"?and that they wouldn't be the youngest team in the league. He is correct, to an extent. The Super Bowl core from 2010 remains mostly in tact.

But after another round of cuts catered toward rookies, it's clear the Packers will be fielding a young team. On the Packers' 53-man roster, 46 players are 28 years or younger (86.8%). And nearly half of the roster -- 25 players -- are 24 years or younger.

No revelation by any means. An emphasis on youth is how Thompson rebuilt the Packers. Yet in sticking to Thompson's blueprint, the Packers do enter the 2012 season green at a handful of key positions. Rather than sign a veteran or two to push a contending team over the top -- much like Ron Wolf did in the mid-90's -- Thompson will be leaning on many players in that 21-24 age bracket. ?Read Full Blog Post

Sept. 4, 2012 | The per-pupil funding that Wisconsin has budgeted for local school districts heading into the 2012-'13 school year is slightly higher than per-pupil funding budgeted for last school year, but still far below the amount the state was sending to school districts before the start of the recession in 2008, according to a new report released Tuesday.

The report analyzes state budget documents for 48 states and projects per-student spending in Wisconsin this school year to be down $911 from the 2007-'08 school year, the fourth-largest decline in spending per student over that period for all the states studied.

But per-student spending by Wisconsin is projected to increase by about $3 per student this year, the second year of Gov. Scott Walker's biennial state budget, according to the report from the Center on Budget Policy and Priorities, a nonprofit Washington, D.C., think tank that describes itself as "fiscally conservative and socially liberal." ?Read Full Article

The concourse, also known as the train shed, is the area where passengers board and disembark from trains to and from Chicago, the Twin Cities, the Pacific Northwest and points in between. ?Read Full Article

The prosecutor showed that over two years Haldar filed 25 applications with the State Department to bring people from India to work at his temple in Milwaukee. King: Letting Japan in trade zone could cost U.S. jobs

United Auto Workers President Bob King on Thursday said he strongly opposes entry of Japan into nine-nation free trade talks, saying it could put American jobs at risk.

The Obama administration has been considering whether to allow Japan in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and has already approved Mexico and Canada in joining the talks.

The talks are aimed at creating one of the world's largest free-trade zones, including some of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

"We could not be stronger in advocating that Japan should not be in," King said in an interview, adding there is "no realistic way to open up the markets in Japan."

While King acknowledged the "geopolitical considerations" in letting Japan take part, he argues the deal could hurt U.S. workers.

"We don't see any way that you can have fair trade with Japan because of all of the nontariff barriers, Japanese culture, tight integration of the government policies and the companies," he said.

Emphasizing the difficulties of opening the market and fair trade with Japan, King said bluntly: "I don't see that happening in my lifetime."

King's comments came after a study released last week by the Ann Arbor-based Center for Automotive Research argued that allowing Japan to take part in the talks could dramatically boost Japanese automotive exports to the United States, and cost more than 26,000 American jobs. U.S. automakers are sharply opposed to allowing Japan into the partnership talks. A free-trade agreement could drop tariffs on Japanese vehicles entering the United States and make it more economically viable to build cars and trucks in Japan and export them to the U.S.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk has said the administration has made no decision on whether to allow Japan to take part.

Calling all do-gooders: Let's get Roldon to Germany! - The ...

You?re probably acquainted with Roldon Brown?s story by now: A 2008 honor grad of the UL Lafayette School of Music, Roldon was raised in a single-parent household. His family went without a water heater for nearly a year so his mom could continue to afford his flute lessons. He has a pretty serious stuttering problem, but speaks eloquently through his flute. Roldon beat out scores of international competitors in July to win a multi-year scholarship studying with renowned flutist Thaddeus Watson at the Frankfurt School of Music & Performing Arts in Germany. Although his academic bill is covered by the scholarship, his living expenses ? boarding, food and transportation ? are not. Have any of you been to Europe lately? The exchange rate sucks!

That?s where we come in, Ind readers. A PayPal account has been established to help Roldon pursue his classical music dreams. Give a little or give a lot, but just give. We?ve met Roldon. He?s a great, humble kid who, despite adversity, has big dreams of performing, teaching and helping economically disadvantaged children pursue their own dreams in classical music.

An instructor at the Acadiana Symphony Conservatory who also performs with the Acadiana and Rapides symphonies, Roldon leaves for Germany in less than two weeks.

To also aid in this community effort, former Acadiana Symphony conductor Xiao-Lu Li and his family, proprietors of Dao Gifts & Fine Art, have donated a painting, ?Beauty with Bamboo Flute,?? a 36?x24? oil on linen by emerging Chinese artist Yong Liu that is expected to fetch between $5,000 and $10,000. Proceeds will help underwrite Roldon's adventure in Germany. The young flutist is also supported by the National Stuttering Foundation.

You can use this link to donate to Roldon?s PayPal account. You can also search Facebook for ?Roldon Brown, Flutist? to learn more about Roldon and offer words of encouragement.

Welcome for Wind Energy Report

Friday, August 31, 2012

Print This Page

Welcome for Wind Energy Report

UK - RenewableUK, the trade and professional body for the wind and marine energy industries, has welcomed a report that calls for the debate on wind policy to be based on evidence.

In the new report ? ?Beyond The Bluster - Why Wind Power Is An Effective Technology?, the Institute for Public Policy Research demonstrates that wind is both an effective way of reducing carbon emissions and a secure source of energy for the UK.

The study highlights evidence from countries such as Spain, Portugal and Ireland which already generate similar proportions of electricity from wind to those proposed in the UK for 2020 in a reliable way, feeding clean energy into the grid without any difficulties.

The report comes only days after a major electricity company revealed that the wholesale price of gas was the single biggest driver of their decision to increase bills, risking thousands of households falling into fuel poverty by depending too heavily on fossil fuels. In contrast, wind energy costs the average UK household just 2p a day.

RenewableUK?s Chief Executive, Maria McCaffery, said: ?The report provides further useful evidence that wind works, and that electricity systems across Europe are utilising very efficiently the higher levels of wind power that the UK will achieve by 2020, when a fifth of our electricity will come from wind.

"The benefits of this are huge ? tens of thousands of jobs, billions of pounds of investment and protection for consumers against sudden wholesale price increases.

?The Government needs to press ahead with its plans for electricity market reform and give clarity and stability to investors. Ministers should not get distracted by noise created by a small anti-wind minority. Two thirds of the British public are in favour of more wind energy. International evidence shows it?s wholly viable, and yet we?re still not taking full advantage of it in terms of deployment.
