Sony rep confirms some 2011 Xperia handsets won't be tasting Google's Jelly Bean

Sony rep confirms some 2011 Xperia handsets won't be tasting Google's Jelly Bean

Some of you might be familiar with Sony's earlier struggles to successfully (and in a timely manner) deliver Google's Ice Cream Sandwich to a slew of Xperia handsets. And, as we all know, Android 4.0's no longer the freshest treat around, thus the Walkman maker will now have to answer all the Jelly Bean questions to come. The first one to do so was a resident Sony mobile expert on the company's UK Facebook page, revealing that the Xperia Arc S and the itty-bitty Xperia Mini Pro won't be receiving the latest and greatest OS from Mountain View. Meanwhile, he also stated there's nothing buttery in the works for the elegant Xperia S, though he did say "ICS should now be approved" for the device. Perhaps this is a sign it's time to start looking for an upgrade, no?

Management shake-up at JPMorgan; Zames is COO

(AP) ? JPMorgan Chase, which is reeling from the fallout of a big trading loss at one of its divisions, announced a broad reshuffling of its top management on Friday.

It was the second round of management reorganization at the nation's largest bank since it revealed the loss that has ballooned to up to $5.8 billion from an initial estimate of $2 billion. The loss has prompted two congressional hearings and led to investigations from international regulators.

The loss has also come to represent the risky bets taken at large banks that can jeopardize the global financial system, barely four years after the financial crisis that hurtled the country into the deepest recession since the Great Depression.

It was also viewed as a glaring example of how difficult it is to run a large bank with large far flung businesses. It has led to calls to break up the big banks and also for the resignation of CEO Jamie Dimon, who up until then had built a reputation as a steady leader. Dimon initially called the trade a "tempest in a teapot," before backtracking and revealing the scope of losses and apologizing several times for his mischaracterization.

The management announcements on Friday appear to be the bank's attempt to restore the investors' trust in the bank.

"Today's appointments are a natural step in aligning our businesses more closely to make our company even stronger," Dimon said in a statement.

Its stock rose 80 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $36.61 on Friday afternoon. They are still down 21 percent from their 52-week high of $46.49 in late March.

Some analysts were left scratching their heads after the announcement, trying to figure out what the reshuffle meant.

"JPMorgan is sending message that it is breaking up Main Street from Wall Street," said Mike Mayo, a banking analyst at brokerage CLSA.

In announcing the management changes, JPMorgan has combined its consumer businesses under one umbrella and its investment banking under another. Mayo believes it was the bank's attempt to show that its Main Street banking operations which offer checking and savings accounts and mortgage loans are being managed completely separately from its more volatile and risky investment banking businesses.

Many academics and lawmakers have said that they should bring back financial legislation that barred consumer banks from investment banks. That law, known as the Glass-Steagall Act, was repealed in 1999.

Earlier this week, in an ironic twist, one of the best-known proponents of big banks Sandy Weill said in an interview on CNBC that big banks should be broken up. Weill built his reputation as an empire builder and brought together investment banking, consumer banking and insurance under the one big umbrella of Citigroup, which he led as CEO. Weill is also seen as the chief architect behind the repeal of Glass-Steagall.

Other analysts didn't think that these were major changes. Paul Miller, bank analyst at broker FBR Capital Markets, said that most of the division heads were familiar names.

"On the surface it looks like status quo," said Miller.

Among the appointments announced Friday, the biggest promotion went to Matt Zames who takes on the title of chief operating officer. It is being read on Wall Street as the clearest sign yet that he is being groomed to succeed Dimon.

Zames' career has recently been on an upward trajectory. Until the trading loss was announced on May 10, 41-year-old Zames was co-head of global fixed income at the investment bank. He was promoted soon after to replace Ina Drew, the chief investment officer who oversaw the division where the loss occurred. Drew resigned in the days after the loss was revealed.

Zames will share the role with Frank Bisignano who is also chief administrative officer at the firm. Bisignano was tapped last year to lead the beleaguered mortgage banking business, which had contributed to major losses for the bank and also embarrassments when it was found out that that division had unlawfully foreclosed on homes of service members while on active duty.

Among other appointments were:

? Todd Maclin, head of the retail bank, and Gordon Smith who heads up credit cards, will become co-CEOs of Consumer & Community Banking.

? Mike Cavanagh and Daniel Pinto have been named to be co-CEOs of the corporate & investment bank.

? Jes Staley, CEO of the investment bank, has been named to the newly-created position of chairman of JPMorgan's corporate & investment bank.

Job Seekers: Branding Yourself As A Generalist Doesn't Work ...

It used to be, the further you got in your career, the more you described yourself as a generalist.

You?d brand yourself as a generalist because that?s what you?ve learned your whole career ? that being a generalist was valuable, demonstrating your ability to quickly adapt to new situations and learn new skills.

The generalist idea

We all learned that it was a badge of honor being able to describe ourselves as a generalists, signifying we had experience in many industries and many job functions.. It was kind of like you had fought in many wars?

This is why so many of us still brand ourselves as generalists. It shouldn?t surprise you that the older we are, the more likely we are to cling to the tradition of generalist branding. Also, many of us just don?t know another way or can?t picture ourselves as anything other than a generalist.

For many years, this worked and worked well. From the 1940?s until 2007, we had a candidate and skills shortage, so employers had difficulty finding managers and workers with the right basic skills ? finding a subject matter expert was rare.

In addition, during the last 17 years, we?ve transitioned to a search based economy ? Now if we want something, we just Google it. A searched based economy allows employers to be specific, more precise in what they want ? and encourages providers (including job seekers) to be more specific and precise in what we can provide.

As marketing guru Seth Godin blogged:

?When choice is limited, I want a generalist. When selection is difficult, a jack of all trades is just fine. But whenever possible, please bring me a brilliant specialist.?

Seth?s right ? why would employers settle for a generalist with shallow knowledge of many things, when they can find a subject matter expert with deep knowledge in solving their specific problem?

Generalist and the expert

When I?ve written about the death of generalist branding in the past I?ve gotten interesting responses. Basically, there?s been an outcry of responses from candidates, generally older workers, who spend much effort describing what businesses should do differently and arguing that businesses should hire generalists. Rather than change themselves, instead these job seekers argue that industry trends should change. Even if it?s true that industry trends are flawed, tilting against windmills won?t help these folks find a job.

Even small companies who are more likely to need generalists and who have truly generalist positions, still hire subject matter experts, not generalists.

While small companies may need people who can wear many hats for certain staff and managerial roles, small business hiring managers typically have one or two overriding priority problems. They typically hire a subject matter expert in solving their priority problems ? who is also able to fill a number of roles and adapt to new situations.

And that?s the order of how companies hiring generalist positions usually make hiring decisions. First ? Find a subject matter expert who has already solved the most pressing priority problems the hiring manager faces. This is almost always done via Applicant Tracking Systems and HR pre-screening. Next ? choose the subject matter expert who also has other skills and the ability to adapt to many roles. The decision of which subject matter expert is also the best at a generalist role is nearly always made during the interview.

If employers first look for subject matter expertise and look via your resume ? why would you brand yourself as a generalist?

But if you don?t know another way to brand yourself (or think of yourself) than as a generalist stay tuned till next week?s article.

Brief Assessment of Pre-Foreclosure Real Estate Buying Strategies ...

? Suggestions for Searching for the right Wholesale drop shipper for the purpose of Amidren | Main

By Billy | July 26, 2012

On this current economic condition, the demand for a inventive real property investor who knows and understands the different strategies and options accessible to distressed owners is at an all-time high. While this next decade will carry extra economic hardship to extra Individuals than some other time in our nation?s history, it would additionally present extra millionaire alternatives for those investors who are in a position to put money into the information and take action.

Here?s a temporary abstract of the myriad purchase strategies most profitable real property investors employ to distinguish our purchase course of from that of realtors.

Wholesale (30%+ Fairness)

A wholesale purchase is loosely defined as a property that may be purchased at greater than 30% low cost to after-repaired value (ARV). Properties in this class typically require in depth rehabilitation in an effort to present them to retail buyers by way of the A number of Itemizing Service (MLS). The typical seller does not have the time, money, or inclination to take on an extensive rehabilitation project. Consequently, investors add a big amount of value by buying the property at wholesale cost and fascinating the companies of a contractor to present the property for sale at a later date. The position of a wholesaler is to find the property, get it under contract, and then ?assign? the contract to an end buyer for an project fee. This fee will be anyplace from $500 to $10,000. This strategy is where most inexperienced persons cut their enamel because it requires no money or credit score to carry out a transaction.

Repair and Flip

Shopping for a property properly under market value, making repairs, and selling conventionally to an end buyer is generally known as a repair and flip strategy and is another one of the frequent methods real property investors start their career. The objective of a normal repair and flip is to put as little time and capital funding as doable into the property and resell as shortly as doable at the low end of the market. For many handymen and tradesman, this strategy is the following logical progression of their careers.

Short Sale (-10 - Fairness)

Short gross sales aren?t called such because they are quick in time or in paperwork. A short sale is a purchase order strategy where an investor engages the seller?s lender(s) to low cost their lien on the property in an effort to make the deal extra attractive. Banks will typically low cost a property for those who can show to them that both the seller and the property are in distress.

To show the seller is in misery, they must show a financial hardship, like medical issues, demise of a family member without life insurance, job loss, divorce, etc. Whatever the underlying cause, a home-owner can be required to ship in the acceptable documents in an effort to reveal a hardship to the lender.

In order for lenders to justify discounting their notes on a property, it typically must be ?the other way up,? or have a unfavourable equity position. Will probably be the duty of the Investor to provide proof that the property is in distress.

As a result of all of the paperwork and negotiating concerned, a profitable quick sale can take a number of months to perform.

Subject-to (zero% - 30% Fairness)

Subject-to purchases typically contain a substantial amount of paperwork and are often misunderstood by sellers and lots of investors. The best way to think of a topic-to buy is to recall the time when notes had been fully assumable. Legislation was later handed to discourage or just about eliminate assumptions so the trendy day assumption analog is to buy properties topic-to.

To understand the topic-to concept, it is important to perceive that the deed for a property and the mortgage for a property are two fully separate documents. Purchasing a property topic-to simply implies that you are taking ownership by taking the deed topic-to the present financing remaining in place. The distinction between a proper assumption and a topic-to buy is that the lender for the property does not need to ?log out? on the transaction.

Selling a property topic-to typically advantages sellers financially. Transaction and holding prices eat through any notional equity that sellers can be left with once they sell. Realtors conveniently keep away from discussing this with sellers once they arrive at their home to get a list agreement signed. The objective as investors is to offer the seller the same net earnings you would get for those who marketed, listed, and offered the house with a Realtor, only quicker. The primary value that we add is providing you with this identical amount of equity and completing the transaction in 5-7 days instead of the months of labor and fear which are created using the traditional gross sales process.

A topic-to buy is usually used when there?s good financing on a property relative to the current market rates of interest or the possibility of executing a load modification to make the financing favorable. Properties are usually purchased at less than a 20% low cost to after-restore value (ARV), which equates to around the identical net sale proceeds using the traditional realtor process. If loans are delinquent or small repairs are needed the investor will decide up the tab along with the minor transaction prices for title insurance and escrow fees.

Contract Task (-5% - 10% Fairness)

A Contract Task (CA) purchase strategy is mostly used for properties where the debt is comparatively excessive as in contrast with the market value of the property. Properties that have between 10% and -10% equity typically fit into this category. This purchase strategy is just like topic-to described above in lots of respects. The distinction is that the original seller agrees to take the financial burden of constructing mortgage funds going forward instead of the investor agreeing to do so. Monetary good points from the transaction are additionally borne by the seller. The investor shows the seller the right way to execute any such transaction and assigns the contract to a new buyer.

The primary source of value for the seller in any such transaction is that it opens the buyer pool up significantly. Instead of getting to market the property to a cash buyer that has a ample down payment and credit standing to buy with third party financing the seller can finance the transaction with the assistance of an investor professional. Sellers are additionally relieved of getting to carry cash to closings to fund transaction and holding prices implicit to the traditional gross sales course of

The extra you learn about inventive methods to buy and sell properties, the extra alternatives you will have for wealth. As Sophocles as soon as mentioned, ?Wisdom outweighs any wealth.? There has by no means been, nor will there ever be, a greater time in America to take motion in real property!

Broken Immigration System Risks Serious Damage to U.S. National ...

?The stakes are too high to fail,? says the report. ?If the United States continues to mishandle its immigration policy, it will damage one of the vital underpinnings of American prosperity and security, and could condemn the country to a long, slow decline in its status in the world.? For this reason, the report urges: ?The United States needs a fundamental overhaul of its immigration laws.?

U.S. Immigration Policy contends that America has reaped tremendous benefits from opening its doors to immigrants, as well as to students, skilled employees and others who may only live in the country for shorter periods of time. But it warns that ?the continued inability of the United States to develop and enforce a workable system of immigration laws threatens to undermine these achievements.?

Directed by CFR Senior Fellow Edward Alden, the CFR-sponsored Independent Task Force on U.S. Immigration Policy reflects the consensus of a bipartisan group of eminent leaders in the fields of immigration policy, homeland security, education, labor, business, academia and human rights. The group urges Congress and the Obama administration to move ahead with immigration reform legislation that achieves three critical goals:

  • Reforms the legal immigration system so that it operates more efficiently, responds more accurately to labor market needs, and enhances U.S. competitiveness;
  • Restores the integrity of immigration laws through an enforcement regime that strongly discourages employers and employees from operating outside that legal system, secures America?s borders, and levies significant penalties against those who violate the rules;
  • Offers a fair, humane, and orderly way to allow many of the roughly twelve million migrants currently living illegally in the United States to earn the right to remain legally.

According to the report, the high level of illegal immigration in the country is increasingly damaging to U.S. national interests??[it] diminishes respect for the law, creates potential security risks, weakens labor rights, strains U.S. relations with its Mexican neighbor, and unfairly burdens public education and social services in many states.?

But it contends that ?no enforcement effort will succeed properly unless the legal channels for coming to the United States can be made to work better.? Therefore, ?the U.S. government must invest in creating a working immigration system that alleviates long and counterproductive backlogs and delays, and ensures that whatever laws are enacted by Congress are enforced thoroughly and effectively.?

The Task Force lays out a series of concrete, realistic recommendations for legislation and administrative reforms that would be part of an immigration policy that better serves America?s national interests:

-Comprehensive immigration reform: A new effort to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill should be a first-tier priority for the Obama administration and Congress, and should be started without delay.

-Attracting skilled immigrants: The United States must tackle head-on the growing competition for skilled immigrants from other countries, and make the goal of attracting such immigrants a central component of its immigration policy. The report urges an end to the hard caps on employment-based immigrant visas and skilled work visas in favor of a more flexible system, the elimination of strict nationality quotas, and new opportunities for foreign students earning advanced degrees to remain in the United States after they graduate.

-National security: The Task Force calls for minimizing visa restrictions that impede scientific collaboration, noting that America?s long-term security depends on maintaining its place as a world leader in science and technology. The administration should also permit a broader effort by the U.S. military to recruit recent immigrants who are not yet citizens or green card holders, so as to bolster U.S. military capabilities.

-Employer enforcement: The Task Force supports a mandatory system for verifying those who are authorized to work in the United States, including a workable and reliable biometric verification system with secure documents. Tougher penalties should be levied against those who refuse to comply. It calls employer enforcement ?the single most effective and humane enforcement tool available to discourage illegal migration.?

-Simplifying, streamlining, and investing in the immigration system: Congress and the Obama administration should establish a high-level independent commission to make recommendations for simplifying the administration and improving the transparency of U.S. immigration laws. The government must redouble its efforts to reduce backlogs and other unnecessary delays by investing in the personnel and technology necessary for handling visa and immigration applications efficiently.

-Improving America?s image abroad: The administration and Congress should launch a comprehensive review of the current security-related restrictions on travel to the United States, with an eye toward lifting restrictions that do not significantly reduce the risk of terrorists or criminals entering the country.

-Border enforcement: The report favors the full implementation of the Secure Border Initiative to gain greater operational control of the country?s borders. It also calls for the expansion of ?smart border? initiatives that use information technologies and targeting tools to help distinguish individuals who may pose a security risk to the United States while facilitating easier entry by the vast majority of legitimate visitors and immigrants.

-State and local enforcement: State and local police forces can and should be used to augment federal immigration enforcement capabilities, as long as this does not interfere with their core mission of maintaining safety and security in the communities they serve.

-Earned legalization: The Task Force favors a policy of earned legalization, not amnesty, for many of the illegal immigrants currently living in the United States. The DREAM Act, reintroduced in the 111th Congress, provides the right model by requiring that young people without status who wish to remain in the United States must attend college or perform military service and demonstrate good moral character in order to earn their eligibility for permanent residence.

Upholding American values: The report identifies three areas that need immediate and serious review?incarceration policies, the severe penalties for minor immigration and criminal violations, and policies on refugees and asylees?and offers steps to address them, including:

  • Expand the use of alternatives to detention, such as ankle bracelets or monitoring parolees.
  • Allow greater discretion in implementing some of the penalties that were previously passed by Congress, such as the mandatory three, five, and ten year bars for many returning deportees.
  • Create an office within the Department of Homeland Security that is responsible for refugee protection, and give greater priority for refugee issues throughout the Department of Homeland Security and in the White House.

The consensus on the bipartisan Task Force around these issues demonstrates that progress on immigration can be achieved. The report concludes that ?the United States has the understanding, the capabilities, and the incentives to move forward and create a more intelligent, better functioning immigration system that will serve the country?s interests. It is time to get on with the job.?

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is an independent, nonpartisan membership organization, think tank, and publisher dedicated to being a resource for its members, government officials, business executives, journalists, educators and students, civic and religious leaders, and other interested citizens in order to help them better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other countries.
