Australian tycoon turns to China for Titanic dream

COOLUM, Australia (Reuters) - Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer has a vision of the future and it's made in China.

Palmer, a law school dropout, has based much of his fortune on selling minerals to China. Now backed by his faith in the fast-growing Asian economy, he wants a Chinese shipyard to build his dream project -- a replica almost down to the tee of the Titanic.

A fleet of luxury Bentley cars shuttled journalists off his private jet last week to hear plans for the ship at his golf resort on a pristine stretch of Australian coastline.

Handing out reproductions of blue floral dinner plates lost with the Titanic 100 years ago, the wise-cracking, self-made billionaire sought to fuel interest in the project, which has been met with skepticism by some in the media.

Palmer dreams of cruising into New York Harbor on Titanic II flanked at the wheel by Hollywood stars, Chinese Communist Party leaders he has befriended, and descendants of the original passengers. A Chinese navy escort, as well as ones from the U.S. and British fleets, would be there too, he says.

"Why not build the Titanic?" questioned Palmer, who made his fortune in real estate and by selling mineral rights in Australia to Chinese investors. "I'm 58 and I've got the money and I don't care what it costs."

The original Titanic, the largest liner in the world when it was launched and dubbed "virtually unsinkable", sank en route to New York after hitting an iceberg in April, 1912, killing 1,517 passengers and crew.

"I'm not saying he won't do it, but all I've seen so far are the plates," said James McCullough, a columnist for the Brisbane Courier Mail who has been following Palmer for years.

Palmer said his shipping company, Blue Star Line Pty Ltd, had reached a "memorandum of understanding" with Chinese shipbuilder SinoTrans to build Titanic II. The original ship was operated by the White Star Line.

The new ship will have the same dimension as the old version with 840 rooms and nine decks, he said. But would have extra safety features including modern life boats and better stability.

"If you book on third class you can share a bathroom, sit down at a long table for dinner every night, have some Irish stew and a jig in the night," added Palmer.

    WORKERS DESERVE A MERCEDES

If all goes to plan, Titanic II is scheduled make its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to Manhattan in four years, according to Palmer. "The big difference, is our ship won't sink and will end up making money as a commercial enterprise."

State-run SinoTrans is also building Palmer a half-dozen shipping freighters capable of navigating the Panama Canal in search of nickel ores to feed a refinery he runs in Australia.

Like his Titanic plans, skepticism dogged Palmer's purchase of the loss-making QNI nickel refinery after the mining behemoth BHP Billiton said it could no longer make money.

The following Christmas, Palmer presented 55 of the refinery's workers with a Mercedes Benz car and gave away 700 holidays to Fiji to celebrate a bumper year of profitability.

"Everyone who works hard deserves something nice," he said.

Palmer made his first fortune in his mid-20s by selling Miami-style beach property in Australia's Queensland state, which is roughly the size of Alaska but with 7,000 km of mostly tropical coastline.

Next, he galloped into natural resources just in time to catch Australia's latest mining boom, fueled by China's appetite for imported minerals to power its modern-day industrial revolution.

Several deals to sell iron ore and coal to Chinese state-owned enterprises propelled Palmer close to the top of a growing legion of super-rich Australian mining magnates.

    DOUBT HIM AT YOUR PERIL

"If you doubt what this man can do you do so at your own peril," said Ian Ferguson, a 60-year-old property investor who gave Palmer his first job in 1976 and now runs the nickel refinery.

"I told Clive I had no experience running a refinery," Ferguson added. "But he said 'You've got good people and marketing skills, so get in there,' and I did."

Though happy to acknowledge his wealth, Palmer refuses to say just how rich he is and outside estimates vary widely.

"Let's just say I'm not exactly calling up my bank needing a rise in my credit card limit," he said.

Forbes puts his wealth at $795 million. BRW magazine, an Australian monthly, says he's worth A$3.85 billion ($4 billion).

He has a passion for vintage cars owning more than 80 and recently dispatched buyers to snatch up even more at a European auction ahead of the opening of a planned museum.

To the horror of conservationists, he wants to turn untouched beachfront near his resort into a theme park with life-sized dinosaurs and high-rise accommodation. A jumbo jet would circle Australia daily picking up and dropping off guests.

As the mining boom unfolded, Palmer formed a firm called China First to sell millions of tons of coal a year to Chinese power stations -- once he can work out how to cart the coal 500 km (300 miles) to his waiting freighters without drawing the wrath of environmentalists.

Never mind, too, the world now has a glut of coal that is forcing other Australian collieries to close: "It's not about the price for coal. Our partners are about getting the coal because they need the heat," said Palmer.

    CASHING IN ON CHINA

By imposing taxes on mining and vetoing foreign investors, often Chinese, Palmer is concerned Australia's politicians underestimate the importance of forging bonds with an economy whose star is rising while the fortunes of traditional trading stalwarts in Europe and the United States fade.

But Palmer recently dropped plans to run for public office after being at loggerheads with leaders from both major Australian parties.

He has, among other things, engaged in a slanging match with Treasurer Wayne Swan and the country's soccer administration, as well as publicly accusing Greenpeace of being funded by an arm of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. The environmental group called the allegation ludicrous.

The son of an Australian silent filmmaker and radio entrepreneur who took his family on a trip to China in 1962, Palmer likes to titillate audiences with stories of meeting the last emperor of China, Pu Yi, and says as a boy he bounced on the knee of Mao Zedong. His claims could not be independently verified.

He admires China for its social and economic headway and considers the Communist nation's government "one of the most democratic institutions" at heart.

A quarter-century after acquiring rights to thousands of acres of abandoned mine exploration ground in the Australian outback for a song, Palmer is ready to cash in again thanks to the Chinese.

By November, Citi Pacific, one of China's biggest steel companies, is due to start paying royalties that could top $500 million a year.

"We have the natural resources here in Australia that China so desperately needs to fulfill its destiny," he says.

Verdict due on Mumbai gunman's appeal

India's Supreme Court was due Wednesday to deliver its verdict on an appeal against the death sentence handed down to the lone surviving gunman from the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Mohammed Kasab, one of 10 gunmen who laid siege to Mumbai in attacks that lasted nearly three days and killed 166 people, launched his appeal claiming he had not been given a fair trial.

He was found guilty of charges including waging war against India, murder and terrorist acts, and was given the death penalty in May 2010.

Two Supreme Court judges in New Delhi have heard the appeal of Pakistan-born Kasab, who is currently held in a maximum-security prison in Mumbai.

If he loses his Supreme Court petition, he can lodge a final appeal for clemency with the president.

During the November 2008 attacks, heavily armed Islamist gunmen stormed targets in Mumbai including luxury hotels, a Jewish centre, a hospital and a bustling train station.

India blames the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant outfit for training, equipping and financing the gunmen with support from "elements" in the Pakistan military.

Kasab initially pleaded not guilty but later confessed, admitting he was one of the gunmen sent by the LeT.

"I was denied a fair trial," Kasab said in a statement when his appeal hearing began in January. "I may be guilty of killing people and carrying out a terrorist act but I am not guilty of waging war against the state."

In 2009, Pakistan charged seven alleged perpetrators behind the attacks but insists it needs more evidence.

The Mumbai attacks horrified India as each development unfolded live on television, and there have been widespread public calls for Kasab's execution.

At the trial, the prosecution produced fingerprint, DNA, eyewitness and TV footage evidence showing Kasab opening fire and throwing grenades at Mumbai's main railway station in the bloodiest episode of the attacks.

Most death sentences in India are commuted to life imprisonment, but convicts can sit on death row for years awaiting a final decision.

Pakistan has admitted that the attacks were planned partly on its soil, but flatly denies any official involvement.

Comcast Enters Home Security Fray - Arkansas Business

Once in a blue moon, a huge Internet service provider or energy company wades into the home security market. Comcast's Xfinity brand is the latest contender in Arkansas, but will it last?

Other large companies have attempted to enter the home security market, but eventually backed out.

"Companies like Comcast, Entergy and First Electric come and go in the alarm market," said Wayne Brownfield, owner of Good Guys Security LLC of Perryville. "They get involved; then a couple of years down the road, they get out."

Brownfield has been in the security industry for decades, working for larger companies before he began Good Guys in 2006. He recalled Entergy buying one of his former employers, then selling it off to ADT after three years.

"There must be a reason why some companies think it's a good deal, then realize it's not and bail out," he said.

Often, ISP companies offer a security package because home users find their broadband or DSL service interferes with the existing security system.

"If you're with AT&T and you get DSL, you've got to have a filter on your alarm panel, or two things happen," Brownfield said. "It'll interfere with and slow down your security service, and you're not going to get your high-speed Internet service."

So rather than letting customers defer to another company to put on an alarm filter, some ISPs monetize the solution.

In Comcast's case, the Xfinity Home system works with the customer's Internet connection. Security systems are historically tied to traditional landline telephones, but customers are gradually shifting to cell phone monitoring. Brownfield said his business was about 60-40 in favor of landlines.

As far as technology goes, Xfinity provides a touchpad control mechanism and sensors for doors and windows, as well as automatic controls that can tie to smartphones. The product is being marketed as a "smart home" system more than a simple security setup.

"It's really that home automation piece that's really cutting edge," said Sean Downey, senior manager for marketing for Comcast's "heartland region." "It allows folks who are on the go to do a lot of things remotely. It not only includes professional monitoring and home security features, but it provides the technology for home controls through a touch screen."

(AP) ? Nick Watney always felt the first playoff event for the FedEx Cup was the most important. A good performance in The Barclays could set up a player to reach the Tour Championship, have a mathematical chance at the $10 million bonus and qualify for all the majors next year.

    This turned out even better.

Watney now has more than just 10 million reasons to be excited.

Not only did his three-shot victory in The Barclays on Sunday put him atop the FedEx Cup standings and assure that he'll have a good shot at golf's largest payoff, Watney suddenly is in the conversation to play in an event that doesn't pay anything at all ? the Ryder Cup.

U.S. captain Davis Love III makes his four wild-card selections after next week's Deutsche Bank Championship outside Boston. Steve Stricker and Jim Furyk are likely to be two of the picks. Based on what happened over four days at Bethpage Black, the other two now are up in the air.

"I don't want to be lobbying. It's his decision," Watney said. "The best way to enter the conversation is to play your way into the conversation."

    That's just what he did.

Watney was two shots behind Sergio Garcia when the final round began. He was two shots behind through six holes after he three-putted for bogey from 40 feet. And just like the outlook on his year, it all changed so quickly.

Watney had a two-putt birdie on the par-5 seventh. On the par-3 eighth, with a dangerous pin at the front of the green with a shaved bank toward the water, he took a little off a 7-iron to play it safe and rolled in a bending, 30-foot birdie putt. Garcia tried to hammer an 8-iron, turned it too much into a bunker and had to scramble for bogey. That gave Watney the lead, and he stretched it to three shots on the 10th hole with a gorgeous approach into 4 feet as Garcia three-putted for bogey.

No one got closer than two shots the rest of the way. Watney hit 8-iron to 10 feet for birdie on the 14th, and he added a birdie on the 18th that didn't matter except for the score. He closed with a 2-under 69 and finished on 10-under 278.

"It's been not quite the year I wanted," Watney said. "But this really makes it all forgotten. Winning a tournament is hard, but winning out here and against this field was very, very difficult. I'm kind of still on a high right now."

Love isn't thinking about only Watney, however.

Brandt Snedeker, a winner at Torrey Pines and a contender at Royal Lytham & St. Annes, battled to the end and finished with two big putts for a 70 that put him alone in second place. Garcia, who bogeyed the last hole for a 75, tied for third with Dustin Johnson, who had a 68.

"Ryder Cup is definitely on my mind," Snedeker said. "But I'm not letting it affect the way I play. Try to win every golf tournament. It gives me more motivation to do it, and if I do that, I know I will make the decision easy for them.

"Davis has an extremely difficult choice with a bunch of guys who did not play well enough over the last two years to be on the team. You can't go wrong with any of them. I think that it's certainly helped everybody who played well this week."

The top three names on the leaderboard: Watney, Snedeker, Johnson. All of them are being considered as a Ryder Cup pick. Watney is the newcomer to the list based on his win at The Barclays, the strongest full field of the year except for the majors.

"I'm thinking much more now than I was coming in," he said. "Coming in here, I didn't deserve to be in the conversation because I had not played my way in. Someone told me that Davis said he wanted a hot player, and we still have a week to go. But like I said, I'd love to be on the team. But I'm not really concerned with it just because it's out of my control."

Tiger Woods, six shots behind at the start of the day, never made a move. He alternated between bogeys and birdies until the sixth hole, and his round imploded on the back nine with a three-putt double bogey on the 12th, a poor wedge that led to bogey on the par-5 13th, and a tee shot on the par-3 14th that sailed over the green and one-hopped against the gallery. He closed with a 76 and tied for 38th.

Garcia already wrapped up his spot in the Ryder Cup for Europe based on his win last week in North Carolina, his first on the PGA Tour in four years. He was going after his second straight win, but he showed signs of a struggle early. He missed back-to-back birdie chances from around 8 feet and missed greens from the fairway.

Watney, meanwhile, didn't miss a green until the 16th hole when he had a three-shot lead.

"I hit a couple bad shots at the wrong moments," Garcia said. "And unfortunately, I just wasn't feeling comfortable."

He had one issue with the New York fans on the 17th, a tough par 3 where club selection was difficult, and Garcia heard it from them when he took his time picking a club. That didn't bother him, and he was pleased about his two strong weeks that signal a good trend in his game.

And he enjoyed watching Watney, a pleasant Californian known as "Rube," after the character in "Major League 2" for being so respectful to his elders.

"At the end of the round on 18, I did obviously congratulate him and wish that he made the team," Garcia said.

None of this would have been possible if Watney had not changed his attitude, to quit getting down on himself when his score wasn't what he thought it should be. And his longtime friend Sam Reeves ? the same friend who introduced Watney to Butch Harmon ? arranged for Watney to meet with Darrell Kestner, the head pro at Deepdale, for a putting lesson. Watney was sitting back to far on his heels, and they worked on the setup.

"It paid off," Watney said, adding that he made more putts at Bethpage than he had all year.

While it was effectively a two-man race for much of the day, there was plenty at stake in the FedEx Cup.

Only the top 100 players advance to the Deutsche Bank for the second of four playoff events. The biggest move belonged to Graham DeLaet of Canada, who started the week at No. 106 and was right on the bubble going into the final round. After back-to-back bogeys early in the round, he rallied for a Sunday-best 65, including a 9-iron he holed for eagle on the 15th. DeLaet moved up to No. 44.

"I guess a lot of people think there's too much volatility in it, but it was in my favor," DeLaet said. "If you can have one really good event, you can catapult yourself up. And now I feel I have a chance to get into the Tour Championship, where this morning I was just hoping to play next week."

It was a good day for another Canadian ? David Hearn. Playing with Woods, he closed with a 71 and moved from No. 108 to No. 67. The other three from outside the top 100 who moved in were Jonas Blixt, Tommy Gainey and Jason Day, who closed with a 66.

'Cyborg': Growing artificial tissues with embedded nanoscale sensors

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? A multi-institutional research team has developed a method for embedding networks of biocompatible nanoscale wires within engineered tissues. These networks -- which mark the first time that electronics and tissue have been truly merged in 3D -- allow direct tissue sensing and potentially stimulation, a potential boon for development of engineered tissues that incorporate capabilities for monitoring and stimulation, and of devices for screening new drugs.

The researcher team -- led by Daniel Kohane, MD, PhD, in the Department of Anesthesia at Boston Children's Hospital; Charles M. Lieber, PhD, at Harvard University; and Robert Langer, ScD, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- reported their work online on August 26 in Nature Materials.

One of the major challenges in developing bioengineered tissues is creating systems to sense what is going on (e.g., chemically, electrically) within a tissue after it has been grown and/or implanted. Similarly, researchers have struggled to develop methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

With the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, a postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane lab, Bozhi Tian, PhD, and his collaborators built mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a "cotton-candy"-like reticular conformation. The networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on 2D layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

"Thus far, this is the closest we've come to incorporating into engineered tissues electronic components near the size of structures of the extracellular matrix that surrounds cells within tissues," Kohane added.

Using heart and nerve cells as their source material and a selection of biocompatible coatings, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Via the networks, the researchers could detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the engineered tissues, as well as measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neurostimulating drugs.

Lastly, the team demonstrated that they could construct bioengineered blood vessels with embedded networks and use those networks to measure pH changes within and outside the vessels -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments.

"This technology could turn some basic principles of bioengineering on their head," Kohane said. "Most of the time, for instance, your goal is to create scaffolds on which to grow tissues and then have those scaffolds degrade and dissolve away. Here, the scaffold stays, and actually plays an active role."

The team members see multiple future applications for this technology, from hybrid bioengineered "cyborg" tissues that sense changes within the body and trigger responses (e.g., drug release, electrical stimulation) from other implanted therapeutic or diagnostic devices, to development of "lab-on-a-chip" systems that would use engineered tissues for screening of drug libraries.

Amber Zuniga, 18, Creates 'The Ultimate Boyfriend Application'

With the first day of classes quickly approaching in this final week of August, 18-year-old Amber Zuniga understood the importance of finding a good back-to-school boyfriend. In an effort to help her fellow single friends distinguish between the studs and duds, she created "the ultimate boyfriend application" -- which quickly went viral on Tumblr and got picked up by bigger media outlets, such as Buzzfeed.

Scroll down to see the larger (and hilarious) image.

The application is "for anyone who might have a crush on someone, or thinks a boy is attractive, or perhaps even has an unhealthy infatuation -- since the application is a tad overboard," Zuniga told The Huffington Post. "But let's not forget Beyonc?. I think she really carried me through the endless hours of strenuous cutting and glueing it took to perfect the application. That woman is gold."

While Zuniga admitted that she has yet to actually use it herself, she assured us that in the future, should a "tall, tan, and handsome guy just waltz into [her] life and offer [her] some french fries," she'll make sure to hand it to him upfront.

And for any single ladies or gents who do not have this foolproof application handy when they spot a potential boyfriend candidate (tsk, tsk), no need to panic -- Zuniga's got you covered.

"If they bring you pizza, they've got potential," she said. "If they let you have the last slice, they're a keeper."

    Amen to that.

How to write and manage the RFP for Software Vendor

    Posted on August 24th, 2012

rfp How to write and manage the RFP for software vendor

So, you have already made up your mind what kind of outsourcing services you need and how to choose an appropriate vendor. Now you need to make the RFP (request for proposal), and this is the main topic of our today?s post.

Firstly, let?s clear up what RFP is exactly (request for proposal).

Request For Proposal, or RFP is a request for commercial quotation from a potential outsourcing vendor. In other words, this is a document which you send to several potential vendors to get comprehensive information in the form of commercial quotation about what they can offer you according to your request. As a result, you get the most appropriate outsourcing vendor.

The main aim of the RFP is to get trustworthy and full-length information from the vendor about the services of your interest. But it?s a bad idea to think that it?s enough just to send a couple of requests and all your problems will be solved. Experience shows, to make a good RFP, one needs to execute titanic work to analyze huge amounts of information. Also, it?s not worth making bulk mail-out in order to save time. How one should act? How one should make the RFP in the quickest and wisest way possible? So, we can recommend some steps of making a sound RFP:

    1. Don?t use patterns when making the RFP. You don?t need them. You should know for sure what your needs are exactly.

    2. Engage your team when making the RFP, discuss aims that are to be reached and needs that are to be met. Also, your capabilities and forthcoming risks should be mentioned here.

    3. Don?t try to select 20-30 potential vendors, 5-6 is enough. Choose those vendors who can really help using general criteria.

    4. Before making and sending the RFP, contact the vendor directly. Find out his general work principles and enquire about his fulfilled projects. This can help you cut off some outsourcing vendors on this stage, also.

    5. Include following paragraphs into your RFP: your project description, technical requirements (detailed specifications); budget; performance time; project owner and, of course, potential pitfalls.

Take into account that a vendor will search for maximum of the information about your company in your RFP: who you are, your financial stability (your ability to finance the project to the very end), which timeframe you offer, who is a decision-maker on this project and some other specific things. You have to understand the more information you provide about your project in the RFP, the more accurate quotation you?ll receive from the vendor. What?s more, in this case you will spend less time communicating with each of the potential vendors to get the appropriate quotation.

Consider the culture of services delivery within the company of the potential vendor. Sometimes, it can be crucial, especially when you are hesitating which vendor to choose.

Please, do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, or would like to get any clarifications or consulting.

More and more of these companies are joining the Linux Foundation, the "nonprofit consortium dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux." The Linux Foundation provides a neutral ground for companies and users to discuss and collaborate on Linux's development, so it makes sense for companies with large Linux footprints to get involved. Linux Foundation members include IBM, Intel, Google, HP, Oracle, and a raft of other names you'll recognize. Twitter will be joining up next week.

You Can Get Great Health Insurance For Less! - Total Vibration

Don?t wait until you need it to start looking for health insurance. Not only will more agencies refuse you, but those who do accept you will often charge you much higher amounts. When you have a pre-existing condition it can be very difficult, if not impossible, to get reasonable coverage for a decent price.

If you get your insurance from an employer and have to pay your own copays and deductibles, encourage your employer to add a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) to their benefits. Both have their own respective benefits, but the main thing that they will do is to help you pay for your copays and deductibles without causing you unexpected financial hardship when the medical bills rack up.

Increase your deductible for lower premiums, but prepare to pay more out-of-pocket expenses. If you feel that you cannot afford your premiums, you can consider a deductible increase, but make sure you take all other expenses into account. You may not actually be saving money if you visit the doctor more frequently.

When choosing a health insurance policy outline your priorities. if you love the doctor you are currently going to make sure he is contracted with the plan you will enroll in, or at least that the coverage is acceptable enough. If not, reconsider the plan, or a plan that may be more open.

You need to be aware of what kind of drugs are affected by your health plan?s coverage. Anti-depressants are the most popularly prescribed kind of drug in the U.S., but hypertension medications are second to them. Many of these drugs are only available in the name brand version, which means that co-pays can become expensive. Without adequate prescription drug coverage, the costs are pretty much unaffordable.

If you are having difficulty finding a health insurer who will accept you due to a pre-existing condition, you may be able to get help from your state. State governments have set up insurance pools for high-risk individuals who can?t otherwise qualify for coverage. Look online for your state department of health services.

When you are shopping for new health insurance coverage, take a look at your existing policy. You will want to look at the details of your current policy and decide what you like and what you do not like. That way, when you are comparing policies, you will know what to look for.

If you are changing health insurance policies, you will need to consider your current doctor. If you have had this doctor for a long time, you may feel reluctant to lose him because your insurance does not work with him. If you will have a difficult time changing, consider your choices in advance.

Before re-enrolling, when your plan is about to expire, look for any changes you need to make. Evaluate how your insurance has worked for you and the costs you?ve incurred and make the changes you need to make before you enroll again. If necessary, consider changing your health insurance altogether.

If you are looking for health insurance, try to buy it through a group insurance plan, like your employer?s. Group insurance rates are much cheaper than individual rates. Also, when you purchase health insurance through your employer, you often are not subjected to a medical exam to qualify. Therefore, group health insurance is a good choice.

To make sure you don?t pay for anything you don?t need, carefully evaluate every option available to you. It?s worth paying a little more if you may need some extra coverage in the future, and there?s no sense in paying for something you know you won?t need. Figure out what you need out of your health insurance, then look for the cheapest plan that offers all of that.

Providing your family with dental insurance, not only helps to promote the health of their teeth and gums, but their bodies, as well. Research has linked periodontal disease with strokes and heart disease. In fact, a staggering number of systemic diseases cause oral complications, such as ulcers and inflamed gums, so early detection of these problems by a qualified dentist, could alert you that the underlying cause is a serious disease, such as diabetes, cancer or leukemia. Left unchecked, oral infections could also spread throughout the body, causing inflammation of organs or heart valves and resulting in complications of the digestive system. Nearly 50% of Americans do not have dental insurance and as a result, many of them do not receive adequate dental care. Don?t let your family be a part of this statistic.

Before finalizing a deal with a specific agency, be sure to read some consumer reviews about them. There are many websites online that allow consumers to make complaints about products or customer service and this is true of insurance providers as well. If you have seen that they have many complaints, it may be time to find another option.

Before you choose a health insurance plan, compare online quotes from different companies. Check out sites like InsureMonkey or eHealthInsurance. Make sure you include extent of coverage along with the cost of the plan. Take your time and try to get as many quotes as possible to see what is affordable for you.

In conclusion, it is definitely difficult to stay on top of all of the latest tips and tricks coming out about health insurance. To make matters worse, information is constantly changing - making it nearly impossible to be an expert unless you make it a point to keep yourself up to date. Hopefully you found this article interesting, informative, and were able to learn a couple of new things.

Video Shows Shooting Outside Empire State Building (WARNING: Graphic)

NEW YORK -- Police say six people wounded in a shooting outside the Empire State Building have been treated at a hospital and released.

The New York Police Department says three other victims are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. One of them is being treated for elevated blood pressure.

A laid-off clothing designer fatally shot a former colleague near the skyscraper Friday morning. He then was shot dead by police officers during a confrontation that wounded the nine bystanders, who suffered graze wounds or other minor injuries.

Dramatic surveillance video shows the confrontation lasted only a few seconds.

Police say the officers responded appropriately when shooter Jeffrey Johnson pointed his gun at them.

Air Force begins using Boeing surveillance satellite

The U.S. Air Force on Monday said it would begin operational use of a new Boeing Co surveillance satellite built to monitor debris and other satellites in space ? nearly two years after the satellite was first launched.

Air Force Space Command said the new Space Based Surveillance Satellite system had achieved its initial level of capability and was ready to support U.S. military requirements after a delay linked to a piece of electronics on board.

The system is the only space-based sensor capable of detecting and monitoring debris, satellites and other space objects without disruptions from weather, atmospheric factors or the time of day that can limit ground-based systems.

      4. Russian PM: Space agency overhaul by September

"This improved access to observe orbiting objects significantly enhances the ability to provide timely, critical information so desperately needed to support warfighter decision making," the Air Force said in a statement.

When the satellite was launched in September 2010, Boeing predicted it would be ready to perform its mission within 60 days, but its "initial operational capability" was delayed by problems with some onboard electronics.

The problem occurred when the satellite traveled through the South Atlantic Anomaly, an area where the Earth's magnetic field is weakest and orbiting satellites are exposed to higher than usual levels of radiation.

The Air Force began implementing a fix for the issue in May, followed by successful software testing that allowed it to start using the satellite.

The new satellite will help the military better track other satellites in space and thousands of bits of debris that could pose a risk to spacecraft.

(AP) ? He is looking for the magic again in all these coffee shops and diners. On the farm pasture scorched by drought, on the state fairgrounds where he got the beer and the pork chop he can't stop talking about. In the school library and the local bar, President Barack Obama is coming back to Iowans as if he wants to reconnect with old friends, telling them he needs one more shot.

"This is really where our movement began ? here in Iowa," Obama tells people jammed into a small middle-school gym in Marshalltown. "We had a conversation about how we move our country in a direction where everybody has opportunity, where everybody has got a shot."

"And we know that journey is not done yet."

Coatless and tieless, an upbeat Obama has spent three days in Iowa this week, his longest sustained campaigning in any one state yet, as he looks to win six of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory.

He has been speaking and drinking and eating his way through the state ? "Who else wants one?" he yells to a small group of onlookers at a sno cone stand in Denison ? because in Iowa, politics is all about winning over voters one by one, by word of mouth. Obama's higher personal favorability ratings over Republican Mitt Romney also could be a big plus in places like Iowa ? especially at a time when voters in the most competitive states are seeing a slew of negative ads daily and as the Republican challenger works to undercut the president's strength.

Four years after the voters here sent him on his way to the White House, he's drawing loud and enthusiastic crowds; a man in the Waterloo one shouts, "Four more beers!" resurrecting the cheer from a night earlier at the fair when Obama bought a round. And he seems remarkably at ease for an incumbent president facing a spirited challenge at a time of 8.3 percent unemployment.

Obama, it seems, has been everywhere.

He dropped by the Coffee Connection in Knoxville, where he chatted up the owner, a Republican running for local office. He hit the gym at Aspen Active off Fleur Drive in Des Moines, near his airport hotel. He bought a Bud Lite at a bar in college town Cedar Falls. In Cascade, Obama walked into a high school library where teachers were getting ready for the upcoming school year. "What do you want me to know?" he asked, opening up their discussion about education policy for questions.

He made a surprise visit to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, a must-stop for any politician looking for votes. "I still have pictures of me and Sasha at the fair," Obama told one of the fair's organizers after buying an admission ticket and picking up a navy blue state fair baseball cap, emblazoned with this year's slogan, "Nothing Compares." He took a picture with the fair queen, ate a pork chop with his hands and drank a Bud Lite, all while a TV crew trails him for footage in an upcoming campaign ad.

In Dubuque, first lady Michelle Obama joined Obama at a campaign rally for the first time in months. Mrs. Obama asked him if he got a "fried Twinkie" at the state fair and then vouched for him, calling him the "son of a mother who struggled" and the grandson of a woman who watched as men she trained were promoted ahead of her.

"Your president knows what it means when a family struggles," Mrs. Obama said ? a not-so-subtle counter to Romney's recent efforts to question Obama's character.

It wasn't all personal touch for the Obamas. There was policy, too, from the president.

He traveled to a parched corn farm in Missouri Valley with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a former two-term Iowa governor, to promise to take steps to help farmers. On the front yard of the McIntosh family farm, Obama said the USDA would buy up tens of millions of dollars in pork and chicken to help farmers get through the drought. "We're not just talking about a few strips of bacon here," Obama said.

At a farm in Haverhill, the president gazed at massive white wind turbines rotating in the distance, urging Congress to pass a tax credit for producers of wind energy, an approach that Romney opposes.

Yet, for all the seeming familiarity of this trip, Obama's second dance has at times seemed distant, a big black bus marked with the presidential seal leading a trail of dark Chevrolet Suburbans, vans and police cruisers.

Onlookers watch from their front yards, in front of Casey's General Stores or Dollar Generals, on street corners and from folding chairs. The crowds are rarely rude ? this is Iowa after all ? but often give off a look of ambivalence, like an electorate taking stock of their options, trying to figure out which way to go.

Iowa voters know Romney from last winter's Iowa caucuses, when he lost to Rick Santorum by a razor-thin margin, and from his first presidential bid in 2008. But they know Obama perhaps better than any group of voters in America.

Still, some Obama backers say they're worried.

Says Justin Owen, a 31-year-old farm equipment salesman from Boone who brought his family to a rally this week: "The ones who do support the president are very quiet about it."

    Others are more confident.

"I'd almost bet my house that in two months you're going to see Iowa" in Obama's column, says Cecilia Parks, a retired school teacher from Anamosa, who cheered Obama during Wednesday's rally in Dubuque. "Obama still has the grassroots here in Iowa. I think in the next couple of months, you're going to see a real surge."
